Plural Marriage in Heaven

Will faithful men have multiple wives in the celestial kingdom? Isn’t that just polygamy postponed?

Bible

They quote this

Bible · Matthew 22:30

KJV + NRSVUE

They use it against any eternal marriage, then against this. Sadducees were denying resurrection.

King James Version

For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

NRSVUE

For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

The Bible answers

Bible · Romans 8:17

KJV + NRSVUE

Joint-heirs. The prize is Christ, not a harem.

King James Version

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.

NRSVUE

And if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.

Book of Mormon

Doctrine and Covenants 132:7, 19

Sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise. God will not force a marriage anyone did not choose.

All covenants not sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise end when men are dead. Those sealed by His law… shall inherit thrones, kingdoms, principalities… if they abide in my covenant.

Official Declaration 1

The Church does not practice it. Living members: one living spouse.

We are not teaching polygamy or plural marriage, nor permitting any person to enter into its practice.

Plural Marriage and Families in Early Utah

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

The Church ended new plural marriages more than a century ago. A man whose wife has died may be sealed to a second wife; a living woman is not sealed to two living husbands. That is not “you get extra wives as a prize.” Speculative internet charts of celestial polygamy are not the handbook. God will not force anyone into a marriage they did not choose. The scandal is usually the cartoon, not the ordinance.

A sealing to the dead is not a command to live polygamy in the next world.

  • Current policy: one living wife. Full stop.
  • Abraham, Jacob, and David are in the Bible. If plural marriage in history damns a people, start there.
  • The Restoration’s center is Christ and the family He heals — not a spreadsheet of wives.
