Plural Marriage and Families in Early Utah
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
The Church ended new plural marriages more than a century ago. A man whose wife has died may be sealed to a second wife; a living woman is not sealed to two living husbands. That is not “you get extra wives as a prize.” Speculative internet charts of celestial polygamy are not the handbook. God will not force anyone into a marriage they did not choose. The scandal is usually the cartoon, not the ordinance.
A sealing to the dead is not a command to live polygamy in the next world.
- Current policy: one living wife. Full stop.
- Abraham, Jacob, and David are in the Bible. If plural marriage in history damns a people, start there.
- The Restoration’s center is Christ and the family He heals — not a spreadsheet of wives.
