Joseph Smith—History 1:16–17

I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head… I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!

Dead Sea Scrolls and related extra-biblical texts that illuminate the same pattern the Restoration restores.

1 Enoch 14:8–25 (Book of Watchers)

Enoch is taken up in a vision of the Great Glory on a crystal throne — a classic Jewish theophany retold more than once in Enochic literature.

Multiple tellings of a throne vision are a Second Temple habit, not a modern red flag.

Joseph wrote or dictated several accounts (1832, 1835, 1838, 1842, and contemporaneous notes). They differ in emphasis the way memory and audience always do: sin and forgiveness in 1832, two Personages in 1838, hosts of angels in 1835. Critics treat difference as deceit. Scripture treats it as testimony retold.

The various accounts of the First Vision tell a consistent story, though logically they emphasize different aspects of Joseph’s experience.

  • Acts preserves multiple Pauline conversion accounts that also differ.
  • The 1838 account is the canonized narrative, not the only honest one.
  • No account denies that Joseph saw Deity and received a divine call.
