Galatians 1:8 — Another Gospel?

Doesn’t Paul curse anyone — even an angel from heaven — who preaches another gospel? Isn’t that Moroni and the Restoration?

Bible

They quote this

Bible · Galatians 1:8–9

KJV + NRSVUE

This is the verse. They mean Moroni — and they stop reading.

King James Version

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

NRSVUE

But even if we or an angel from heaven should proclaim to you a gospel contrary to what we proclaimed to you, let that one be accursed! As we have said before, so now I repeat, if anyone proclaims to you a gospel contrary to what you received, let that one be accursed!

How we read it

Paul is cursing a different gospel — teachers in Galatia who added circumcision as the ticket (Gal 1:6–7; 5:2–4). The test is the message, not the messenger. If “even an angel” banned angels, Gabriel, the tomb angel, and Revelation 14:6 would all be accursed. They aren’t. Moroni brought 1 Corinthians 15: Christ died, was buried, rose. That is Paul’s gospel.

The Bible answers

Bible · Revelation 14:6

KJV + NRSVUE

The same New Testament already sends an angel with the everlasting gospel.

King James Version

And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

NRSVUE

Then I saw another angel flying in midheaven, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation and tribe and language and people.

Bible · 1 Corinthians 15:1–4

KJV + NRSVUE

Paul’s own definition of the gospel is the cross and the empty tomb — which is what Moroni brought.

King James Version

Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you… how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

NRSVUE

Now I want you to understand, brothers and sisters, the good news that I proclaimed to you… that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures and that he was buried and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures.

Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon answers

3 Nephi 27:13–14

Jesus, in the Book of Mormon, defines His gospel as the cross. That is not ‘another gospel.’

Behold I have given unto you my gospel, and this is the gospel which I have given unto you—that I came into the world to do the will of my Father, because my Father sent me. And my Father sent me that I might be lifted up upon the cross; and after that I had been lifted up upon the cross, that I might draw all men unto me.

2 Nephi 25:26

A book that talks of Christ this much is not replacing Him.

And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.

Doctrine and Covenants 76:40–42

Same gospel Paul preached: crucified, risen, to save.

And this is the gospel, the glad tidings, which the voice out of the heavens bore record unto us— That he came into the world, even Jesus, to be crucified for the world, and to bear the sins of the world, and to sanctify the world, and to cleanse it from all unrighteousness; That through him all might be saved whom the Father had put into his power and made by him.

Ancient witnesses

Dead Sea Scrolls and related extra-biblical texts that illuminate the same pattern the Restoration restores.

11QMelchizedek (11Q13) — a heavenly figure proclaims liberty

Melchizedek will proclaim to them the Jubilee, thereby releasing them from the debt of all their sins… It is the time of the year of grace of Melchizedek.

Second Temple Jews already expected a heavenly herald of good news. Revelation 14:6 is in that stream: an angel with the everlasting gospel. Galatians 1 does not cancel Revelation 14. It tests the message. If the message is Christ crucified, risen, and coming again, the messenger is not accursed.

1 Enoch 48; 4 Ezra 13 — a named, preexistent Messiah

The Chosen One / Son of Man is named before creation and is the one through whom the Lord of Spirits saves.

The Restoration’s Christ is not a 19th-century invention. He is the biblical and Second Temple Messiah, now testified in a second nation.

FAIR

Galatians 1:8 and the Restoration

FAIR Latter-day Saints

Paul’s target in Galatia is a gospel that adds circumcision and the law as conditions of Gentile salvation — not an angel who hands a people a book about Jesus. The test is content. 1 Corinthians 15:1–4 defines that content: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose the third day. That is the Book of Mormon’s burden from the title page to 3 Nephi 27. If Galatians banned every angel, Gabriel at Mary’s annunciation, the angel at the empty tomb, Cornelius’s visitor, and the angel of Revelation 14 would all be accursed. They are not. Moroni is in their company, not in the Judaizers’.

Paul curses a contrary gospel, not additional witnesses of the same Christ. Moroni did not replace Calvary. He pointed a continent at it.

  • Read Galatians 1:6–9 in Galatians. The ‘other gospel’ is law-as-ticket, not ‘Christ plus more scripture.’
  • Paul himself received the gospel ‘by the revelation of Jesus Christ,’ not from a committee (Galatians 1:11–12). Restoration Christians are copying Paul, not contradicting him.
  • Revelation 14:6 predicts an angel with the everlasting gospel to every nation. Countercult ministries quote Galatians and skip John.
  • 3 Nephi 27, 2 Nephi 25:26, and D&C 76:40–42 preach the same gospel Paul preached: the cross, the resurrection, remission of sins in Christ.
  • If your definition of ‘another gospel’ is ‘does not recite the later creeds,’ you have left Paul and joined a fourth-century club.

The Restoration of the Gospel

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

The Restoration does not offer a rival Savior. It offers the New Testament church back: apostles, prophets, priesthood, baptism, the gift of the Holy Ghost, and the same Christ. That is not Galatians’ ‘other gospel.’ That is Galatians’ gospel with the offices Paul said would last ‘till we all come in the unity of the faith’ (Ephesians 4:11–13).

The gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored to the earth. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Christ’s New Testament church restored.

  • Faith, repentance, baptism, and the Holy Ghost are Hebrews 6:1–2, Acts 2:38, and the fourth Article of Faith — not a frontier invention.
  • Critics who say ‘angel = automatic heresy’ have not read their own New Testament.
