The King Follett Discourse

Didn’t Joseph teach in the King Follett sermon that God was once a man and that we will become gods — which is blasphemy?

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature.

Thus he has given us, through these things, his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of lust, and may become participants of the divine nature.

The Son does what He sees the Father do. That is the couplet’s biblical root.

The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

The Son can do nothing on his own but only what he sees the Father doing, for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise.

Becoming Like God

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Latter-day Saints hope to become like the Father through Christ — joint-heirs, not rivals. King Follett is one sermon in that stream. It is not the baptismal interview. Eastern Christians have said ‘God became man so that man might become god’ for centuries. The Restoration is blunt about it. Blunt is not the same as blasphemous.

We do not replace the Father. We are invited, through the Son, to become what a child can become.

  • Theosis is older than Nauvoo.
  • A funeral sermon is not the Standard Works.
  • ‘As man now is, God once was’ is a couplet, not a biography of the Father’s mortal sins.
