“The Only True and Living Church”

Isn’t it arrogant — and un-Christian — to say you are the only true church?

Bible

They quote this

Bible · Ephesians 4:4–5

KJV + NRSVUE

One body, one faith, one baptism. Exclusivism is in Paul first.

King James Version

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism.

NRSVUE

There is one body and one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism.

How we read it

One body, one faith, one baptism, one Lord. Paul is not describing an invisible fog. A keys claim is the New Testament’s own particularity, not 1830 arrogance.

The Bible answers

Bible · Mark 9:38–40

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me. For he that is not against us is on our part.

NRSVUE

Do not stop him, for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us.

Doctrine and Covenants 1:30

The only true and living church — collectively, not that others have no truth.

And also those to whom these commandments were given, might have power to lay the foundation of this church, and to bring it forth out of obscurity and out of darkness, the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth, with which I, the Lord, am well pleased, speaking unto the church collectively and not individually.

Restoration of the Church

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Every church with a creed thinks it is righter than the next one. We are simply blunt: keys, apostles, and the Book of Mormon. D&C 1 already says ‘collectively and not individually.’ Good people, real faith, and real light exist outside our membership records. What we will not do is pretend all baptisms, all priesthoods, and all canons are interchangeable. That is not arrogance. That is a specific historical claim you can test.

True and living is about keys. It is not a permission slip to despise other disciples of Jesus.

  • 13th Article of Faith: we believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent — and in seeking after anything virtuous in anyone.
  • Baptism for the dead is our theology of how God is fair to everyone else.
  • If exclusivism is the sin, ask how many churches will take our baptism without a second dip.
