Premortal Life

Did we exist as spirits before birth, or is that an unbiblical speculation?

Bible

The Bible answers

Bible · Jeremiah 1:5

KJV + NRSVUE

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee. That is not poetry about DNA.

King James Version

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

NRSVUE

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.

Bible · Job 38:7

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

NRSVUE

when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?

Book of Mormon

Abraham 3:22–23

Intelligences organized before the world. Jeremiah’s verse, on the record.

Now the Lord had shown unto me, Abraham, the intelligences that were organized before the world was; and among all these there were many of the noble and great ones; And God saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the midst of them, and he said: These I will make my rulers; for he stood among those that were spirits, and he saw that they were good; and he said unto me: Abraham, thou art one of them; thou wast chosen before thou wast born.

Doctrine and Covenants 138:56

Even before they were born, they, with many others, received their first lessons in the world of spirits and were prepared to come forth in the due time of the Lord to labor in his vineyard for the salvation of the souls of men.

Ancient witnesses

Dead Sea Scrolls and related extra-biblical texts that illuminate the same pattern the Restoration restores.

Wisdom of Solomon 8:19–20

As a child I was naturally gifted, and a good soul fell to my lot; or rather, being good, I entered an undefiled body.

A canonical-adjacent Jewish text already assumes a soul that exists before embodiment and enters a body. That is not Greek novelty smuggled into Joseph Smith. It is Second Temple anthropology the Restoration takes seriously.

1 Enoch (Book of Parables) and the heavenly council

1 Enoch describes the Chosen One and the holy ones in heaven before the judgment of the earth, and Job 38 places the sons of God at the founding of the world.

Premortal existence explains the biblical council, foreordination, and the war in heaven (Revelation 12) without turning them into metaphors. Moses 4 and Abraham 3 name the same council the Bible keeps hinting at.

Gospel Topics

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

We are eternal beings, children of heavenly parents, who accepted God’s plan and the premortal Christ’s offer to be our Savior. Mortality is a chapter, not our origin story.

We lived with God as His spirit children before we were born on earth. In that premortal life we accepted His plan, which included a Savior and the agency to choose.

  • Jeremiah 1:5 is not merely “God’s foreknowledge in the abstract.” The prophet is known, sanctified, and ordained before the womb.
  • Job 38:7 has a heavenly host present at creation, shouting for joy. They are not uncreated abstractions.
  • Foreordination (Alma 13; Abraham 3) is not Calvinist predestination. Agency operated there and here.
  • This doctrine dignifies every human life: no one is an accident of chemistry.
