Priesthood Authority and Apostolic Keys

Why do Latter-day Saints insist that baptism, the sacrament, and sealing require restored priesthood keys, not only sincere faith?

Bible

The Bible answers

Bible · Hebrews 5:4

KJV + NRSVUE

No man taketh this honour unto himself. Authority is given, not claimed in a book club.

King James Version

And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.

NRSVUE

And one does not presume to take this honor but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

Bible · Matthew 16:19

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

NRSVUE

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Articles of Faith 1:5

We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.

Doctrine and Covenants 110:11–12, 16

After this vision closed, the heavens were again opened unto us; and Moses appeared before us, and committed unto us the keys of the gathering of Israel… After this, Elias appeared, and committed the dispensation of the gospel of Abraham… Therefore, the keys of this dispensation are committed into your hands.

Ancient witnesses

Dead Sea Scrolls and related extra-biblical texts that illuminate the same pattern the Restoration restores.

Community Rule (1QS 9) and 11QMelchizedek

The Qumran community waited for a prophet and for messiahs of Aaron and Israel, and 11QMelchizedek presents a heavenly priest who atones and judges in the last days.

Second Temple Jews did not treat priesthood as a metaphor for warm feelings. They argued about legitimate priests, a true temple, and who held the right to teach and atone. The Restoration stands in that biblical fight: authority is conferred, keys are real, and a heavenly priesthood after the order of Melchizedek is not a Mormon invention.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Priesthood is the authority and power of God delegated to man. Keys direct that authority. Without restored keys, ordinances may be sincere and still lack the warrant heaven recognizes.

The priesthood is the authority of God given to man to act in His name. Priesthood keys are the right to preside and to direct the Lord’s work.

  • Aaron did not volunteer. He was called. Hebrews 5:4 is still the rule.
  • Christ gave binding and loosing keys to living apostles, not to a book alone.
  • The Kirtland Temple visions (D&C 110) name the keys of gathering, the gospel of Abraham, and this dispensation.
  • This is not a claim that other Christians have no truth or no faith. It is a claim about authorized ordinances.
