Bible · Exodus 28:2–4

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty… that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office.

NRSVUE

You shall make sacred vestments for the glorious adornment of your brother Aaron… so that they may serve me as priests.

Doctrine and Covenants 124:40–42

Let this house be built unto my name, that I may reveal mine ordinances therein unto my people; for I deign to reveal unto my church things which have been kept hid from before the foundation of the world.

Ancient witnesses

Dead Sea Scrolls and related extra-biblical texts that illuminate the same pattern the Restoration restores.

Songs of the Sabbath Sacrifice (4Q400–407); 1QS washings

Qumran liturgies dress a community for heavenly worship, with priestly courses and purity washings — temple on earth joining temple in heaven.

Sacred clothing, staged instruction, and covenant are ancient temple grammar. Masonry preserved fragments; the Restoration restored the thing itself.

Dates matter: priesthood keys and endowment instruction begin before and beyond lodge membership. Overlap in signs or presentation is real and limited. The theology — sealing, exaltation, the Abrahamic covenant, women as well as men endowed — is not Masonic. Hugh Nibley spent a career pointing at ancient temples instead of at lodges.

A recovered temple may rhyme with surviving fragments. Rhyme is not plagiarism.

  • Biblical priests wore holy garments for glory and beauty.
  • Qumran already joined washings, covenant, and heavenly liturgy.
  • Temple covenants point to Christ and Abraham, not to a fraternity.

Temple and Cosmos

Hugh Nibley

Nibley spent a career showing that the endowment’s grammar is ancient temple, not Nauvoo lodge. Sacred vestments, staged instruction, creation and fall, a prayer circle, and a house that maps heaven: that is Moses, Qumran, and the early Christian prayer circle. Masonry kept shards. The Restoration restored the thing those shards came from.

If you want the source of the temple, stop at Sinai and at Qumran. The lodge is a late echo, not the well.

  • Nibley’s ancient parallels (vestments, circle, cosmos) are the load-bearing case against “Joseph copied the Masons.”
  • Dates still matter: keys and endowment content are older than Joseph’s lodge membership.
  • A recovered temple may rhyme with surviving fragments. Rhyme is not plagiarism.
