The Pearl of Great Price

What is the Pearl of Great Price, and can Moses, Abraham, and Joseph Smith—History stand as scripture beside the Bible?

Bible

The Bible answers

Bible · Matthew 13:45–46

KJV + NRSVUE

The name is Jesus’ parable. A small book, a great price.

King James Version

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

NRSVUE

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

Bible · Jude 1:14–15

KJV + NRSVUE

Enoch prophesied. Extra-biblical Enoch is not a Mormon invention.

King James Version

And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

NRSVUE

It was also about these that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, “See, the Lord is coming with ten thousands of his holy ones, to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all the deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”

Book of Mormon

Also restored

Moses 1:39

Immortality and eternal life of man. The pearl is the plan.

For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.

Abraham 3:22–23

Noble and great ones. Premortal life on the page.

Now the Lord had shown unto me, Abraham, the intelligences that were organized before the world was; and among all these there were many of the noble and great ones; And God saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the midst of them, and he said: These I will make my rulers; for he stood among those that were spirits, and he saw that they were good; and he said unto me: Abraham, thou art one of them; thou wast chosen before thou wast born.

Ancient witnesses

Dead Sea Scrolls and related extra-biblical texts that illuminate the same pattern the Restoration restores.

1 Enoch and the Book of Giants (Qumran)

Behold, he comes with ten thousands of his holy ones to execute judgment upon all, and to destroy all the ungodly.

Jude quotes 1 Enoch as prophecy. Qumran preserved Enochic books, including the Book of Giants, that Genesis never printed. The Book of Moses’s Enoch cycle is not a nineteenth-century novelty in kind. It is the Restoration doing what the New Testament already did: treating Enoch as a real prophet with a real book.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Moses restores the vision of God, the adversary, creation, and Enoch’s city. Abraham restores the covenant, astronomy as priesthood teaching, and the premortal council. Joseph Smith—History is the Prophet’s own account of the First Vision and the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. The Articles of Faith are a concise creed of the Restoration. Together they are a pearl: small, costly, and worth selling lesser theories to keep.

This is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.

  • Jude already authorized extra-Genesis Enoch as prophecy.
  • Moses 1:39 is the Restoration’s purpose statement, not a footnote.
  • Abraham’s intelligences are the biblical God of spirits made explicit.

Enoch, Abraham, and ancient texts

Scripture Central

The Book of Abraham’s facsimiles and the papyri are a separate, serious question. They do not erase Abraham 3’s theology or Moses’s Enoch, which independently matches the shape of ancient Enoch literature Joseph could not have read in 1830. The Pearl of Great Price earns its place by doctrine and by that ancient echo, not by winning every Egyptological skirmish on the internet.

A canon that restores Enoch is standing where Jude stood, not where nineteenth-century fiction stood.

  • Qumran’s Enoch books were unpublished in Joseph’s youth.
  • Joseph Smith—History is primary source material, not later legend.
