Restoration of the Priesthood

Why was the priesthood restoration documented later than some expect?

Bible

The Bible answers

Bible · Hebrews 5:4–6

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest… Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

NRSVUE

And one does not presume to take this honor but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was… 'You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.'

Book of Mormon

Doctrine and Covenants 13:1

Upon you my fellow servants, in the name of Messiah, I confer the Priesthood of Aaron, which holds the keys of the ministering of angels, and of the gospel of repentance, and of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins.

Ancient witnesses

Dead Sea Scrolls and related extra-biblical texts that illuminate the same pattern the Restoration restores.

11QMelchizedek (11Q13)

Melchizedek appears as a heavenly deliverer who proclaims liberty and executes the judgment of God — a Second Temple memory of a priesthood older than Levi.

The Restoration’s Melchizedek priesthood is not a Mormon invention; it is a return of a biblical and Qumran hope.

FAIR Latter-day Saints

Oliver Cowdery and Joseph both testified of John the Baptist. Later, Peter, James, and John brought the higher priesthood. Line-by-line newspaper coverage was not how 1829 worked. The Church’s ordinances still rest on those keys, which is why baptism and confirmation are not freelance Christian hobbies in Latter-day Saint theology.

Authority is received; it is never assumed. That is Hebrews 5, and it is D&C 13.

  • Two independent witnesses described the Aaronic restoration.
  • Keys explain why we do not invent ordinances.
  • 11QMelch shows Jews still hungered for Melchizedek’s order.
