Let us gather together… unto the land of Cumorah, by a hill which was called Cumorah… I hid up in the hill Cumorah all the records which had been entrusted to me by the hand of the Lord, save it were these few plates.

Cumorah and geography

FAIR Latter-day Saints

Early Saints often assumed one Cumorah. The text allows a New York depository (Moroni traveling far with a small set of plates) and a Mesoamerican-scale destruction. Neither faith nor apostleship requires a final stand in Palmyra. What is revealed is that Moroni buried the plates Joseph found.

We are bound by Moroni’s plates, not by nineteenth-century assumptions about battlefields.

  • Joseph’s hill is the place of the plates we have.
  • Mormon 6 describes a different kind of landscape and scale.
  • Limited geography and a New York repository can both be true.
