No witness recanted. Several left the Church and still would not deny the plates. Vision-only theories have to call honest enemies liars for the rest of their lives. Physicality plus divine showing is exactly the pattern of resurrection witnesses in the Gospels.
Men who hated Joseph still would not take back the plates. That is not how fraud unravels.
